A Trip to the Beach

A very fitting end to the touring season for the 356 Group, although the beginning looked a bit doubtful. In spite of the prediction of at least rain-less cloudy weather for the ocean beaches, the early morning of Saturday, September 19, looked much lake a typical January day of solid rain! However, by the time the group of seven cars departed Fife the drizzle gave way to cloud-dotted blue sky.

Following Hwy. 18 across the narrows bridge to the 302 exit, the group picked up some great 356 roads with the canopies of trees and surrounding water providing a great backdrop. An unscheduled but needed pit stop in Shelton was met with great satisfaction although it was necessary to reclaim Ray Berry in his Red coupe as he was still on the road. On our way again through McCleary and into Aberdeen where Ray and Ed Buchwald left the group to christen Ray’s new condo on the shores of Westport.

The sunny afternoon was spent touring Ocean Shores, checking out the stores, and generally relaxing. Some of us even found the local ice cream dispenser. The evening started with a gathering at the Grey Gull reception area with wine and a few hors ‘d oeuvres as evidenced by the attached photo. A great opportunity to meet some new 356 owners and share old stories. In fact, this was the first tour event for a new member, Fran Cunningham with her ’61 Red coupe. I think she will be back for more activities.

Dinner at Mariah’s at the Polynesian Resort was followed by a shuttled run to the nearby Quinault Beach Resort where most of us helped support the local casino; although I understand Paul and Marianne Hatfield did depart on the positive side! Most of us returned early, but a couple of folks were still trying to recoup their contributions well into the evening.

Not to miss an opportunity for a good drive, the group departed Sunday morning to travel up the Washington coast a few miles to the little town of Pacific Beach. The sunny blue sky and sparkling water provided a perfect setting. Breakfast at the Windjammer at the Naval Resort Facility provided more opportunity to share stories with new and old friends, Seth Marrus and Kate Baldwin, Eric and Kim Lee, Fran’s friend, Jackie, and the others previously mentioned.
