President’s Article for August/September

Those of you that receive the 356 Registry newsletter will notice the coverage on this year’s somewhat soggy Bull Session. In spite of the rather dismal conditions about 185 enthusiasts turned out for the event even though many were reluctant to bring out their 356’s in the wet. Fortunately, the very heavy mist dissipated about 10 o’clock and kept away until mid-afternoon. As if she had an insight on Northwest weather, Diane and the 356 Goodie Store were well stocked with 356-emblazoned fleece pull-over. Welcome relief for the cool day.

While the listing of upcoming events is a little sparse, we do have the traditional Round the Mountain tour hosted by Kim and Eric Lee scheduled for Saturday, August 7. Due to road construction Eric indicates they may reverse the route slightly. And, they have guaranteed a sunny clear day this year! Regardless, it is always a fun event particularly the final destination at the Lee’s residence in Ashford. Check out the details in an accompanying notice.

Mark your calendar for the great Kirkland Concours d’ Elegance at Carillon Point on Sunday, September 12. Always a great display of classic and exotic vehicles in a very unique setting. Our group is always welcomed to joint with other Porsches from the Pacific Northwest Region of PCA. Space will be limited this year due to parking for the cars in the featured marques. Watch for more details via an email as the date approaches.

Speaking of activities, this year’s nominations will include the position of Event Coordinator. The duties include assisting the Board in selecting and planning the various events for the Group whether breakfasts, picnics, tours, or ?? As the number of members in the Group continues to increase it is essential that greater effort be placed on setting up events that appeal to a wide group of members.

With this in mind please pass along names of any members that would be interested in this position or any of the other Board positions as many of us will be moving along.

It is your club so do not be shy about contributing a little time to making the club a source of great fun and information.

Keeping the faith.

Jack

President’s Message

April/May 2010

A Change of Seasons

As we look forward to the coming of Spring and more opportunities to bring our little gems out on the roads, we must first take a break to acknowledge the passing of a fellow 356 aficionado and dear friend to the 356 Group Northwest, Orr Potebnya. I am certain you will all share our expression of condolences to Orr’s family in this time of loss. Orr was a very active owner of several 356’s and instrumental in the growth of the Group; in fact, Orr was responsible for the naming of our Group newsletter, DesigNr. Take a moment to read more of Orr’s background and life, with and without Porsches, in another section of the DesigNr.

Our first event of the season proved to be a real winner. Most likely a result of a spectacular sunny and warm day, twenty-one cars filled the parking lot at the Redhook Brewery. Not much better sight than a group of beautiful vehicles lined up side-by-side. Of course, our VP Marty Nunez had to show off his lovely "new" Speedster! Many admiring comments on the Speedster and other cars were very evident by patrons of the brewery.

Coming up in May are a couple of fun events for the parking crowd and the tourers. May 2 is the date and the Triple XXX Drive-in in Issaquah is the place to enjoy loads of memorabilia from the 50’s and 60’s while enjoying a monster hamburger, fries, and honest-to-goodness malt. Check out the notice elsewhere in the DesigNr for more detail. Should be a really fun time to display your favorite ride and share memories of cruisin’ Main!

For the wine and touring members of the Group, May 22 – 23 will be the Yakima Valley wine tour. Cars will leave Issaquah about 9:00 on Saturday for a leisurely drive across the Cascades to Prosser where we will enjoy lunch, tours of many nearby wineries, and dinner at a local winery. Plans for Sunday include a back roads tour, a fun lunch and optional tastings. Reservations are a definite must by April 15 at the Best Western Horse Heaven in Prosser. Refer to the announcement in other parts of the newsletter, but do not procrastinate!

On a legal note, thank you to those that took the time to vote on the new Constitution and By-Laws. Based upon the count we met the requirements for ratification. As you may recall, the Board agreed to develop the new position of Event Coordinator, for which the president may appoint an individual until the next elections. However, we may have a group of gals that have offered to plan and coordinate more activities for the balance of the year. Stay Tuned!

Spring is in the air . . . . .

Well, at least we can hope that spring is not too far down the road so that we can enjoy a few more tours and outside activities in the sunny skies. As the yearly schedule unfolds you will certainly see a good variety of events.

However, to finish off 2009 in good style, 35 members attended the Christmas Brunch at the BluWater Bistro at Carillon Point to enjoy a great presentation by Glenn Mounger on the background of the Pebble Beach Concours ‘d Elegance. Glenn’s past chairmanship of the event provided an interesting insight into the workings of the event as well as photos of may rare automobiles. Thanks, Glenn. As an added bonus, the Dickens Carolers brought us into the holiday mood with a wonderful variety of our favorite carols, thanks to the support of our VP, Marty Nunez. We were delighted to see Bernice Kent in attendance in spite of the loss of her husband, Mike, a long time and active member of the Group. Our sympathy goes out to Bernice and family in this time of loss.

As we move into upcoming activities for 2010, the first event will be the return of the Winter Pick-Me-Up on February 20 at the Redhook Brewery in Woodinville. A good opportunity to shake out the winter blah and, who knows, the sun may be shining to allow a few 356’s to come out.

After a one-year hiatus, the annual Bull Session will return to Denny Aker’s hobby garage! Although a difficult decision, the Board and Denny felt that the Group needed to get back closer to the original concept of the Bull Session and Denny has promised this will be primarily a 356 event!

In addition, the Board will be promoting a Top-Only Concours event during August. If the details can be arranged, we would like to utilize the generous hospitality of Griot’s Garage in the new location in Tacoma. The new facility will feature greatly expanded display areas, extensive parking, and in-house food facilities.

Okay, now on to business matters.

As noted in the attached Treasurer’s and Membership Report shown elsewhere, the Group continues to show adequate funds to continue operating so it appears we will reject any stimulus funds that may be offered! Membership is up slightly to 218.

Your Board has been busy over the past few weeks analyzing the Group’s Constitution and By-law for out of date items or non-conformities. As part of these updates, the Board is suggesting that the positions of Newsletter Editor, Webmaster, and the new-created position of Event Coordinator be added to the Board as elected positions, although the Event Coordinator would be non-voting. This approach will add strength to the Board as well as increasing accountability. Other modifications include increasing the expenditure amounts requiring Board or membership approval, succession of officers, and other housekeeping items. The Constitution and By-laws will be emailed to all members in the next few weeks with a request to approve or reject via email response to our Secretary, Eric Lee.

All for now.

Jack

On to a New Year . . . . .

Yes, another year has passed and now it is on to the next one. This past year, members of the 356 Group Northwest have been able to enjoy activities from our opening event in February at the Winter Pick-Me-Up to the joint Holiday Brunch in December. Now, the new Board of Directors will build on this base to add even more fun for the coming year.

Thanks much to Marty Nunez (V)P), Vic Anderson (Secretary), Perry Richards, (Treasurer), Tina Richards (Membership), Walt Carrel (DesigNr Editor), and our Webmeister, Paul Hatfield, for their solid support this past year and great effort in making it fun. Luckily, the members have chosen to return most of the board for another year and have added Eric Lee as Secretary.

Our second joint breakfast will take place on December 19 at Carillon Point and will include a great presentation on the background of the Pebble Beach Concours ‘d Elegance by one of our very own, Glenn Mounger. To add a festive air to the occasion, holiday music will be provided by the Dicken’s Carolers. Please check the Holiday Brunch notice elsewhere in the DesiNr for reservation information.

Of course, our major event for the coming year will again be the Annual Bull Session on Sunday, June 6. From all accounts, the new location at Griot’s in Fife was well received by the members. And, many of you may know that Griot’s will be moving to a new and much more extensive location in February/March of 2010. While the event is a few months away, the Board will be evaluating Griot’s invitation to their new facility or return to Denny’s Garage again. As always, your input is welcomed.

Other events planned for the coming year include a couple of new activities and revival of an old one. On Saturday, May 2, we shall enjoy burgers and root beer at the Triple X drive-in located in old Issaquah. Then, on May 22, an overnight jaunt across the Cascades to enjoy a little of our locally-produced (but world-renowned) wines with members from Eastern Washington and Oregon. Mark your calendars now.

Time for a plea for help!

The Group is in need of an Event Coordinator, Social Chair, Tour Planner, or whatever you may wish to call the position. But it would greatly assist the board and add more fun to the year if other members would step up to chair or co-chair an event such as a tour, overnight, visit to a local garage of interest, or set up a tech session. We can provide you with all the back-up needed for publicity, etc., but your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Email one of the board members with you ideas.

Keeping the Faith

Jack Keyes

President,

356 Group NW

7-10-2009

Although I have some history on my car ,I wondered if anyone in your region can add anything? I bought it from Victoria Canada in 1996,the car having travelled via ownership up the Weat coast with some of these former owners:
Ben Peterson   California    1968

Jim Freeman     Sacramento 1970

Bob Simmons    Kennewick 1972   [ Bob sent me a lot of good information]

Ernest Bennecke   Yakima1974

Then  Tim Pickstone   Victoria Island Canada 1991   Tim gave me a lot of information and passed me the above owner history

Car  1956 356A speedster  VIN 80252  Was originally white but now Ruby Red [like] Since 1972  normal engine not original

The car seems to have spent a lot of its life in the NW region and I wondered if any of your members knew thw car?

Best wishes

David Griffin, Somerset UK, 356 Registry Member, davidgriffin@breathe.com

6-10-2009:  Another Bull Session is now in the past events category.  As noted in the web page, nearly 90 cars attended in spite of the rather iffy weather.  However, this did not seem to dampen the spirit of the attendees and everyone appeared to have a great time.

The addition of the German band, Hans Happy Music, provided a nice touch and added a flair to the event.  Thanks again to Marty Nunez for the sponsorship.  And, it is always great to have Diane man the 356 Registry Goodie Store.

As with any change in location, there are logistical concerns to be addressed.  The Griot's group provided the utmost in cooperation and assistance in making certain the facility and their crew were in top form. We certainly could not have asked for more.  And, they have asked us to return next year.

I would welcome your input on possible changes that could be initiated were we to return to Griot's next year.  Areas to consider:

Food
Entertainment
PA System
Door Prizes
Raffles
Keep the Faith.

Griot's Garage                                              356 Club Northwest Thank You

A grateful thanks you to the 356 Club Northwest for allowing Griot’s Garage to host this years Bull Session. I’ve been a member of the Club for some time and
I have enjoyed attending the event at Denny’s place for years. While our facility is nowhere near as nice as Denny’s, all of us at Griot’s Garage are thankful to the Club for being here. I hope all the attendees enjoyed the day. I sure did. Thank you to everyone for bringing your beautiful cars. I can’t tell you how excited I was to see the parking lot filled with 356s. All of us at Griot’s Garage appreciate your support and thank you for the business. Should the Club want to come back next year, we would be happy to accommodate.

Have fun in your garage!

5-12-09  Notes from the Prez -

During a discussion last year,  the Board brought up the possibility of a joint quarterly breakfast on the Eastside. Well, it is time to pursue that idea more fully. As such, we will start evaluating sites in the north Bellevue/ Kirkland area for a good breakfast restaurant with very adequate parking for our 356's. Hopefully, a location that is fairly accessible from 405.

If a location can be tied down quickly, we may try to set up for June.  If not, we will work on the July time period. However, you may have noticed that Paul's Deception Pass Tour falls on the same day as the southend breakfast.  May be a good opportunity to move to the week prior.

If anyone has a favorite east side location, please pass along the name and location so that we can check it out.

Jack

There is a group in the Hood River, OR area planning a caravan drive to the 2009 Bull

Session in Tacoma, WA on June 7th....  We are wondering if there are any other

Eastsiders interested in joining us?

The plan at present, is to meet in Yakima, WA at a convienent place, then tour over Mt.

Rainier via Chinook Pass / Hwy 410 into Tacoma. Details have not yet been firmed up, so

we are open to any suggestions.

It would be nice to hear from you if interested, so check your calendars, but don't feel you

have to make any firm committments at this time.

Can't wait to get out there in the 356 !!!

                                             THE PRESIDENT’S FORUM

03-09-09

As we have all heard in the news in February, wild fires have swept through various parts

of Southeastern Australia. Over 2,000 homes have been leveled, over 210 have perished,

and they are looking for 100 more in a church and shelter.

A fellow 356 member, Rod Glue, in Mansfield, Victoria has collected more than $9,000 for

the purchase of over 100 bicycles to deliver to children who have lost everything in these

devastating fires. His hope is to collect more funds from 356 members around the world to

help with this very worthwhile campaign. Attached are a few pictures provided by Rod

that illustrate the impact of these fires on the region

The 356 Group Northwest has participated in this effort by matching the very generous

donation of $500.00 from our Vice-President, Marty Nunez.

If you would care to donate you can email Rod your credit card information with the

amount you wish to donate. The email address for Rod is rod@vacuumtrucks.com.au.

Rod is also able to accept checks from US-based banks.-- Photos of the fire below

Jan. '09

While it would be easy to dwell on the somewhat bleak economic outlook for the new

year of 2009, we will leave daily reminders to the media folks while we concentrate on

the use and maintenance of our favorite car. Our thanks to the past board for their

excellent job in providing a variety of tours, social events, and other activities to suit the

desires of a wide range of members. The new board plans to build on that program to

enhance our activities even further. The new board members along with contact

information are listed in the front of this issue of the 356 DesigNr

As we are a volunteer organization, your help is greatly needed to plan and accomplish

the current and projected events for the coming year. Your support is required to

assist in the planning of tours (day and overnight), programs for breakfasts, news

articles and photos, visits to interesting private automobile collections, etc. Here are

a few thoughts the board has discussed for this year to supplement the current activities:

bulletVisit to Le May Museum
bulletGimmick rally
bulletQuarterly breakfast on east side for both north and south groups
bulletFund-raising event or participation with a charity to share our cars
bulletRecognition of the 15-year anniversary for 356 Group Northwest

You will also notice in this issue the invitation from the Pacific Northwest Region of PCA

to participate in a 1959 Rock ‘n Roll event on March 28th at the Inglewood Country Club.

PNWR is requesting any members with 1959 or earlier 356’s to attend. If interested,

contact Dennis Rood at PNWR or Marty Nunez, our new VP, to sign up.

Speaking of other joint activities with PCA, we have also been invited to participate

more heavily in the Kirkland Concours at Carillon Point in September. Those of you

attending in the past will remember the great display of newer Porsches in the north

parking lot. However, it would certainly be great to see a stronger representation from

356GroupNW there as well. Of course, Denny Aker does a fine job with his beautiful

cars, winning his class as well.

As Bruce promised, there will be a 356 Bull Session again this year. The board has

discussed a couple of great sites for the event, which is tentatively set for June 7. We

will keep you posted on the location, but it will definitely be a fun event, as always.

And finally, improvements to the club newsletter, 356 DesigNr, have also been

discussed.

 A few possible changes include:

bulletA central color page
bulletMore tech articles
bulletClearinghouse of favorite vendors as supplied by members
bulletOn-line access on website (in lieu of hard copy)
bulletAssistance in preparing the newsletter (articles, photos, etc.)

Please contact anyone on the board to offer your suggestions for events. Or, better yet,

step up to the plate to organize the event. Remember, you folks make the club.

Keep Pushing –

Jack
